Die Ufer des Kanals bestehen oft aus Stein oder Beton und daher gibt es in der unmittelbaren Umgebung des Kanals wenig Grün zu finden. Eine originelle Lösung besteht darin, an den Stellen, wo es die Schifffahrt nicht behindert, schwimmende grüne Inseln zu schaffen oder, an den Ufern befestigt, bewachsene Gabionen anzubringen, auf denen sich halb-aquatische Pflanzen (gelbe Iris usw.) entwickeln können. Diese neuen Ökosysteme ziehen Wasservögel an, aber auch viele Fischarten, wie Hecht oder Quappe, die dort laichen können.
