Las orillas del canal a menudo están hechas de piedra o concreto, por lo que hay poca vegetación en las inmediaciones del canal. Una solución original consiste en colocar islas flotantes verdes en aquellos lugares donde no interfieran con la navegación, o, ancladas a las orillas, jaulas de piedra cubiertas de vegetación en las que pueden desarrollarse plantas semiacuáticas (como el lirio amarillo, etc.). Estos nuevos ecosistemas atraen aves acuáticas, pero también muchas especies de peces, como el lucio o el carpín, que pueden desovar allí.
