Avec des berges souvent empierrées ou bétonnées, la végétation est peu présente aux abords immédiats de l’eau du canal. Une solution originale consiste, là où cela ne gêne pas la navigation, à placer des îles végétalisées ou, accrochées aux berges, des fascines végétalisées, sur lesquelles se développeront des plantes semi-aquatiques (Iris des marais,...). Ces nouveaux écosystèmes attirent les oiseaux d’eau, mais aussi nombre d’espèces de poissons, comme le brochet ou le gardon, qui peuvent y frayer.
