Von Alters her eine Verteidigungslinie, die bereits während der Belagerung von Oudenaarde 1600/1604 von den spanischen Truppen verwendet wurde. Während des Ersten Weltkriegs wurden Bunker zum Schutz des Hafens und der Strände gebaut. Im Zweiten Weltkrieg errichteten die Deutschen mehrere neue Bunker.
