Das am Albert-Kanal, an einem strategischen Ort errichtete Fort von Eben-Emael bleibt fortgehend ein Militärgebiet. Die Festung hatte als Hauptaufgabe, damals den Durchgang des Albert-Kanals und der Maas zu verriegeln und ebenfalls das Maastal zwischen Visé und Maastricht zu verteidigen. Außer der Festung gibt es auch ein auf Material, Uniformen, Waffen, u.v.a. spezialisiertes Museum von 1940, das gleichzeitig als Museum für die Schlacht vom 10. und 11. Mai 1940 um den Albert-Kanal gilt. Bei dieser Schlacht kamen etwa 700 belgische Soldaten ums Leben.
