Jacob Van Artevelde weist in die Richtung von England. Seine opportunistische Wahl für den englischen König sorgte im 14. Jahrhundert dafür, dass Gent und damit ganz Flandern größtenteils neutral und somit wohlhabend in den Hundertjährigen Krieg bleiben konnten. Dank des 'Weisen Mannes von Gent' blühte die Tuchindustrie wie nie zuvor. 660 Jahre nachdem er von Rivalen ermordet wurde, wird Gent immer noch die Arteveldestadt genannt.
