Der Kölner Hauptbahnhof ist der wichtigste Eisenbahnknoten von Köln und liegt im Stadtzentrum neben dem Kölner Dom. Mit täglich insgesamt 318.000 Reisenden und Besuchern sowie rund 1200 An- und Abfahrten zählt er zu den meistfrequentierten Fernbahnhöfen der Deutschen Bahn. Der Durchgangsbahnhof mit seinen elf Gleisen gehört – zusammen mit dem auf der anderen Rheinseite gelegenen Bahnhof Köln Messe/Deutz – zu den 21 Bahnhöfen der höchsten Preisklasse 1 von DB Station&Service. Von seiner südöstlichen Ausfahrt führt die Bahntrasse in einer engen Kurve auf die Hohenzollernbrücke über den Rhein nach Deutz auf der rechtsrheinischen Seite.
