Ursprünglich wurde der Offlumer See als Abbaugebiet von Sand- und Kies über Jahrzehnte genutzt. Danach wurde er nach und nach an die Öffentlichkeit übergeben. Heute bietet der See seit seiner Umgestaltung im Rahmen der Regionale im Jahr 2004 ein exklusives und trotzdem naturnahes Ambiente im Schatten ehemaliger Industrieruinen.
Mit seiner Strandpromenade und einem weiten Badestrand ist er das perfekte Ausflugsziel für Touristen aus ganz NRW, sowie Einheimische aus Neuenkirchen und dem Umland. Vom Strand oder den Terassen des See Cafes lässt sich fast der ganze See überblicken. Von hier aus lässt sich aber auch in Ferne, in die Weiten des Münsterlandes über Feld und Flur schweifen.
