Am 14. Oktober 1806 wurde das preußische Heer, das ein halbes Jahrhundert lang eine Referenz in Europa war, in zwei simultanen Schlachten besiegt. Marschall Davout, der das Kommando über den rechten Flügel des französischen Heeres hatte, trat in Auerstedt gegen die Preußen an, während Kaiser Napoleon in Jena kämpfte.
