Der Hauptbahnhof Augsburg ist der zentrale Knotenbahnhof für den Großraum Augsburg und Bayerisch-Schwaben. Täglich verkehren hier über 50.000 Personen und etwa 1.000 Züge im Fern-, Regional- und Güterverkehr. Er verfügt über das älteste noch im Betrieb befindliche Empfangsgebäude einer deutschen Großstadt . Es gibt elf Hauptgleise, über 450 Weichen und mehr als 250 Signale. Das Stellwerk wurde 1972 zu den Olympischen Spielen in München für 40 Mio. DM erbaut.
Der erste Augsburger Bahnhof wurde 1838 an anderer Stelle, nahe dem Roten Tor an der Baumgartnerstraße, von der München-Augsburger Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft erbaut. Die ab 1838 angelegte Bahnstrecke München–Augsburg ging 1840 in Betrieb.
