Das 950jährige Görlitz ist mit 56.000 Einwohnern die größte Stadt der Oberlausitz. Von Zerstörungen im 2. Weltkrieg verschont, bildet sie mit ihren fast 4.000 überwiegend restaurierten Kultur- und Baudenkmalen ein städtebauliches Gesamtkunstwerk, das in Deutschland seinesgleichen sucht. Zur Via Sacra gehört Görlitz wegen des Heiligen Grabes aus dem 15. Jahrhundert. Diese als "Lausitzer Jerusalem" bezeichnete Anlage, zu der auch die St. Peter und Paul Kirche gehört, ist ein Zeugnis mittelalterlicher Frömmigkeit und Landschaftsarchitektur von europäischem Rang. Einen Besuch lohnen auch die aufwendig sanierte jüdische Synagoge sowie die zahlreichen Museen der Stadt. Auf keinen Fall versäumen sollte man den Gang über die Altstadtbrücke in den polnischen Teil der Stadt.
