With a population of 56,000, 950-year-old Görlitz is the largest city in Upper Lusatia. Spared from destruction in the Second World War, its almost 4,000 cultural and architectural monuments, most of which have been restored, form an urban masterpiece that is unparalleled in Germany. Görlitz is part of the Via Sacra because of the Holy Sepulchre from the 15th century. Known as the "Lusatian Jerusalem", this complex, which also includes the Church of St. Peter and Paul, is a testimony to medieval piety and landscape architecture of European standing. The lavishly renovated Jewish synagogue and the city's numerous museums are also well worth a visit. Don't miss the walk across the Old Town Bridge into the Polish part of the city.
