Dan Brown behauptet, dass der Gnomon eine Indikation des Nullmeridians von Paris ist. Obwohl er sehr nahe an diesem Nullmeridian liegt, ist dies nicht korrekt. Gnomons wurden in Kirchen verwendet, um spezifische Zeitpunkte im Jahr messen zu können. Sie hatten auch ein religiöses Ziel (z.B. das Datum von Ostern bestimmen) und ein praktisches Ziel (wann der Frühling beginnt, damit die Bauern wissen, wann sie ihre Pflanzen säen müssen).
