Dan Brown affirme que le gnomon est une indication du zéro méridien de Paris. Bien qu'il soit très proche de ce zéro méridien, ce n'est pas correct. Les gnomons étaient utilisés dans les églises pour mesurer des moments spécifiques dans l'année. Ils avaient également un but religieux (par exemple, déterminer la date de Pâques) et un but pratique (savoir quand commence le printemps afin que les agriculteurs sachent quand semer leurs récoltes).
