Dan Brown afirma que el gnomon es una indicación del meridiano cero de París. Aunque está muy cerca de ese meridiano cero, esto no es correcto. Los gnomones se usaban en las iglesias para poder medir momentos específicos en el año. También tenían un propósito religioso (por ejemplo, determinar la fecha de Pascua) y un propósito práctico (cuándo comienza la primavera para que los agricultores sepan cuándo deben sembrar sus cultivos).
