Vor der Revolution befanden sich auf dem Platz ein rechteckiger Brunnen und das Haus einer Chorherrin, die bei der Renovierung abgerissen wurden. Der Bürgermeister Stanislas Bresson begann daraufhin mit der Umgestaltung des Place du Collège, der heute Place de Mesdames heißt. Im Jahr 1828 ließ er den heutigen Brunnen errichten.
Obwohl das Becken 1993 nach dem ursprünglichen Plan komplett neu gestaltet wurde, wurde die gusseiserne Schale sorgfältig erhalten. Diese Einrichtung trägt zum historischen Charakter und zum zeitlosen Charme dieses symbolträchtigen Platzes bei.
