Antes de la Revolución, la plaza albergaba una fuente rectangular y una casa Chanoinesse, que fueron demolidas durante la renovación. El alcalde Stanislas Bresson emprendió entonces la reestructuración de la plaza del Colegio, hoy plaza de las Damas. En 1828, mandó construir la fuente actual.
Aunque la pila fue completamente reconstruida en 1993 según el plano original, la pila de hierro fundido se ha conservado cuidadosamente. Contribuye al carácter histórico y al encanto intemporal de esta emblemática plaza.
