Vóór de Revolutie stonden op het plein een rechthoekige fontein en een huis van de Chanoinesse, die tijdens de renovatie werden afgebroken. Burgemeester Stanislas Bresson begon toen met de herstructurering van de Place du Collège, nu bekend als de Place de Mesdames. In 1828 liet hij de huidige fontein bouwen.
Hoewel het bassin in 1993 volledig werd herbouwd volgens het oorspronkelijke plan, is het gietijzeren bassin zorgvuldig bewaard gebleven. Het draagt bij aan het historische karakter en de tijdloze charme van dit emblematische plein.
