1678 ordnete Ludwig XIV. die Errichtung eines allgemeinen Hospitals für Arme und Bedürftige an der Stelle des Klosters Couvent des Carmes an.
Die zum Krankenhaus gehörende Kapelle, Saint Charles geweiht, wurde 1751 von Jean Giral vergrößert und umgestaltet, danach von Jacques Nogaret.
Sie ist recht eigenartig angelegt: aufgrund Ihrer zwei Emporenebenen, die mit den Etagen des Krankenhauses verbunden waren, konnten die Gäste ohne Treppensteigen den Gottesdiensten beiwohnen.
Die Kapelle steht seit 1947 unter Denkmalschutz und empfängt nun die Maison des Chœurs mit Proben der Chöre Montpelliers und Konzerten für die Öffentlichkeit.
