En 1678, Louis XIV ordonne la création à Montpellier d'un hôpital général pour les pauvres et les indigents sur l'emplacement du couvent des Carmes.
La chapelle affectée à l’hôpital, dédiée à Saint Charles, est agrandie et remaniée par Jean Giral en 1751 puis Jacques Nogaret.
Elle comporte un plan bien particulier : ses deux niveaux de tribunes, correspondant aux étages de l'hôpital, permettaient aux pensionnaires d'assister de plain-pied aux offices !
Classée monument historique en 1947, la chapelle accueille désormais des répétitions des chorales de la ville et des concerts ouverts au public.
