Die 16 Air Assault ist der primäre Reaktionsverband der Britischen Armee und in der Lage, eine ganze Bandbreite von luftmobilen Operationen zur Unterstützung von Evakuierungs-, Kampf- und friedenserhaltenden Einsätzen durchzuführen.
Die Brigade wurde am 1. September 1999 durch eine Zusammenführung der 24 Airmobile Brigade und der 5 Airborne Brigade gegründet. Die Brigade ersetzte die 24 Airmobile Brigade als britischen Beitrag zur NATO Multinational Division Central . Im Oktober 2002 wurde dieser multinationale Eingreifverband jedoch aufgelöst.
