Die Maquisards wurden so genannt, weil sie sich im dichten Unterholz (französisch: maquis) der französischen Landschaft versteckten, um im Zweiten Weltkrieg Guerillakriegsführung gegen die deutschen Besatzer zu führen. Ihr Name bezieht sich direkt auf diese natürlichen Zufluchtsorte, wo sie sich versteckten, um den Widerstand zu organisieren und durchzuführen.
Niedrige Sträucher werden Phrygana (φρύγανα) genannt.
