Stadtbaumeister Danièl Stalpaert entwarf 1660/62 im neuen Stadtplan vier Plätze für öffentliche Kirchen. Die hier errichtete Kirche sollte eine temporäre "Holzpredigtstätte" werden, wobei man sich vornahm, "den Platz oder das Feld um diese Kirche jedoch groß genug zu lassen, um darauf zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt eine Steinkirche errichten zu können". Als einzige verbliebene Holznothilfe steht das schlichte Kirchengebäude aus 1668/70 noch immer. Die Steinkirche, die an ihrer Stelle gebaut werden sollte, wurde nie errichtet.
