El arquitecto urbano Daniël Stalpaert diseñó en 1660/62 cuatro plazas para iglesias públicas en el nuevo plan urbano. La iglesia que se construiría aquí debía ser un "temporal barracón de predicación de madera", con la intención de "dejar la plaza o campo junto a la Iglesia lo suficientemente grande como para poder colocar una iglesia de piedra en el mismo, en algún momento". Como única iglesia de emergencia de madera que ha sobrevivido, el sencillo edificio de la iglesia de 1668/70 todavía está allí. La iglesia de piedra que debía reemplazarla nunca se construyó.
