Il progettista municipale Danièl Stalpaert progettò nel 1660/62, nella nuova espansione della città, quattro piazze per chiese pubbliche. La chiesa che qui fu costruita doveva essere un temporaneo "granaio di predicazione in legno", con l'intenzione di "lasciare la piazza o il campo davanti a quella chiesa abbastanza grande da poter, in un certo momento, costruire una chiesa in pietra". Come unica chiesa di emergenza in legno rimasta, l'edificio ecclesiastico semplice del 1668/70 esiste ancora oggi. La chiesa in pietra che avrebbe dovuto sostituirla, non è mai stata costruita.
