Bleskensgraaf erhielt seinen Namen von einem früheren Landesherren, nämlich "Der Herr (Graf) von Blassekijn". Das Dorf liegt am Flüsschen Graafstroom. Wie der Name schon sagt, handelt es sich eigentlich um einen gegrabenen Kanal, der an das Flüsschen Alblas anschließt. Im Dorf ist zu sehen, wie der gerade gegrabene Teil (die Graafstroom) auf Höhe der Wijngaardeseweg in den gewundenen Fluss (die Alblas) übergeht, der durch Bleskensgraaf, Oud Alblas und Alblasserdam fließt und dort in den Norden mündet.
Bleskensgraaf hat einen relativ neuen Dorfkern. Der alte Kern wurde in den frühen Morgenstunden des 12. Mai 1940, also zu Beginn des Zweiten Weltkriegs, bei einem Bombenangriff vollständig zerstört. Alte Gebäude wird man in diesem Dorf daher kaum antreffen.
