Bleskensgraaf a reçu son nom d'un ancien seigneur local, à savoir "Le Seigneur (Comte) de Blassekijn". Le village est situé au bord de la petite rivière Graafstroom. Comme le nom l'indique, il s'agit en fait d'un canal creusé qui se connecte à la rivière Alblas. Dans le village, on peut voir comment la partie droite creusée (la Graafstroom) se transforme au niveau de la Wijngaardeseweg en la rivière sinueuse (L'Alblas), qui traverse Bleskensgraaf, Oud Alblas et Alblasserdam pour se jeter dans le Nord.
Bleskensgraaf a un noyau villageois relativement nouveau. Le vieux noyau a été complètement détruit lors d'un bombardement dans la matinée du 12 mai 1940, donc au début de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Il est donc peu probable de trouver de vieux bâtiments dans ce village.
