Bleskensgraaf recibió su nombre de un antiguo señor feudal, a saber, "El Señor (Conde) de Blassekijn". El pueblo está ubicado junto al arroyo de Graafstroom. Como indica el nombre, este es en realidad un canal excavado que se conecta con el arroyo de Alblas. En el pueblo se puede ver cómo la parte recta excavada (el Graafstroom) se transforma, a la altura de Wijngaardeseweg, en el río sinuoso (El Alblas), que fluye por Bleskensgraaf, Oud Alblas y Alblasserdam y desemboca en el Norte.
Bleskensgraaf tiene un núcleo de pueblo relativamente nuevo. El núcleo antiguo fue completamente destruido por un bombardeo en la madrugada del 12 de mayo de 1940, es decir, al comienzo de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Por lo tanto, apenas se encontrarán edificios antiguos en este pueblo.
