William und Anna Singer, ein amerikanisches Ehepaar, beauftragten 1911 den Architekten J.W. Hanrath mit dem Bau einer Villa. Im Herbst 1912 ziehen sie in ihr besonders schönes Wohnhaus, 'Die wilden Schwane'. Dort empfangen sie viele befreundete Künstler aus der ganzen Welt. Nach dem Tod von William Singer beauftragte Anna Wouter Hamdorff den Bau eines Museums zum Gedenken an ihren Ehemann, um dort ihre Kunstsammlung unterzubringen. Der neue Singer-Komplex wurde 1956 eröffnet.
