Vor 1998 war es auch die Hauptstadt der gleichnamigen Gemeinde. Seit 1998 gehört Sleen zur Gemeinde Coevorden.
Sleen liegt an zwei LAW's: dem Pieterpad und dem Drenthepad und grenzt an das Naturschutzgebiet Sleenerzand, das 1.600 Hektar groß ist.
