Stavoren erhielt 1118 das Stadtrecht und ist damit die älteste der friesischen elf Städte.
Im 14. Jahrhundert war die Hansestadt eine blühende Hafenstadt. Der Reichtum vergangener Zeiten wurde legendär durch die Geschichte des ‚Vrouwtje von Stavoren‘. Durch ihren Hochmut soll der Hafen verschlickt sein.
Mit dem Kommen der Franzosen und der Einführung des kontinentale Systems, bei dem der Handel mit England verboten wurde, nahm die Schifffahrt ab und damit auch der Reichtum von Stavoren.
