Stavoren ottenne i diritti di città nel 1118 ed è quindi la più antica delle undici città frisoni.
Nel XIV secolo, la città anseatica era un fiorente porto. La ricchezza di un tempo divenne leggendaria grazie alla storia della ‘Signora di Stavoren’. A causa della sua hybris, il porto si sarebbe insabbiato.
Con l’arrivo dei Francesi e l'introduzione del sistema continentale, che proibì il commercio con l’Inghilterra, la navigazione diminuì e anche la ricchezza di Stavoren.
