Stavoren was granted city rights in 1118, making it the oldest of the Frisian eleven cities.
In the 14th century, the Hanseatic city was a thriving port town. The wealth of yesteryear became legendary due to the story of the 'Lady of Stavoren'. Due to her pride, the port would become silted up.
With the arrival of the French and the introduction of the continental system, which prohibited trade with England, shipping declined, along with the wealth of Stavoren.
