Stavoren kreeg in 1118 stadsrechten en is daarmee de oudste van de Friese elf steden.
In de 14e eeuw was de Hanzestad een bloeiende havenstad. De rijkdom van weleer werd legendarisch door het verhaal van het ‘Vrouwtje van Stavoren’. Door haar hoogmoed zou de haven zijn verzand.
Met de komst van de Fransen en de invoering van het continentale stelsel, waarbij de handel met Engeland werd verboden, nam de scheepvaart af en daarmee ook de rijkdom van Stavoren.
