Zwischen Drouwen und Gasselte liegt auf der Hondsrug das Naturschutzgebiet „Het Drouwenerzand“. Das Dünengebiet entstand im Laufe der Zeit durch Überweidung, das Stechen von Heideplaggen und das Abgraben von Steinen. Der Drenther Schriftsteller Harm Tiesing nannte „Het Drouwenerzand“ ein gefürchtetes Naturphänomen. Bis zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts wurde der Weg zwischen Gasselte und Drouwen regelmäßig unter dem Dünenboden begraben und war dann kaum begehbar.
