Entre Drouwen y Gasselte se encuentra en Hondsrug la reserva natural "Het Drouwenerzand". La zona de arena móvil se ha formado a lo largo del tiempo debido al sobrepastoreo, la extracción de turba de brezo y la recolección de piedras. El escritor drentés Harm Tiesing describió "Het Drouwenerzand" como un formidable fenómeno natural. Hasta principios del siglo XX, el camino entre Gasselte y Drouwen a menudo quedaba enterrado bajo la arena móvil y era apenas transitable.
