Das Rathaus wurde vom Stadtzimmermann Claes Bockes Balck gebaut. Der Grundstein wurde am 1. April 1715 von dem dreijährigen Willem Karel Hendrik Friso, Prinz von Oranien und Nassau, gelegt. Das klassizistische dreigeschossige Gebäude hat eine Fassade mit 27 Fenstern. Über der Tür im Mittelrisalit steht in goldenen Buchstaben die Aufschrift "Pace et Justitia". Die beiden Statuen über dem Eingang stammen von Gerbrandus van der Haven. Pieter Nauta gestaltete das Giebel, in dem sich die Stadtjungfrau befindet, flankiert von Putten.
