El ayuntamiento fue construido por el carpintero de la ciudad Claes Bockes Balck. La primera piedra se colocó el 1 de abril de 1715 por el príncipe de Orange y Nassau, Willem Karel Hendrik Friso, de tres años. El edificio clásico de tres plantas tiene una fachada con 27 ventanas. Encima de la puerta en el risalto central está inscrito en letras doradas "Pace et Justitia". Las dos esculturas sobre la entrada son obra de Gerbrandus van der Haven. Pieter Nauta hizo el frontón, en el que se encuentra la Virgen de la Ciudad, flanqueada por putti.
