Die Balij ist ein junger Wald zwischen Zoetermeer, Pijnacker-Nootdorp und Delft, der aus einem Naturwald, einem Moorwald, Wander- und Radwegen sowie einem Spielwald besteht. Am Rand der Balij befindet sich auch eine Stadtfarm. Zusammen mit dem Bieslandse Wald bildet die Balij ein stetig wachsendes Stück 'grüne Lunge' von 15 Kilometern Länge zwischen Zoetermeer und Delft. Die Balij hat eine Größe von 360 Hektar.
Die Forstverwaltung 'De Balij und Bieslandse Wald' ist Teil der Randstadgrünstruktur, einem großen zusammenhängenden Gebiet innerhalb der Randstad, das angelegt wurde, um zu verhindern, dass die Städte durch Wohnungsbau, Industrie und Glasanbau zusammenwachsen. Hier gehen Freizeit und Naturentwicklung Hand in Hand.
