The Balij is a young forest between Zoetermeer, Pijnacker-Nootdorp, and Delft that consists of a natural forest, a swamp forest, walking and cycling paths, and a play forest. There is also a city farm at the edge of De Balij. Together with the Bieslandse Forest, De Balij forms a steadily growing piece of 'green lung' 15 kilometers long between Zoetermeer and Delft. The Balij covers 360 hectares.
The Forestry 'De Balij and Bieslandse Forest' is part of the Randstad green structure, a large contiguous area within the Randstad, which is designed to prevent cities from growing into each other due to housing construction, industry, and glass horticulture. Here, recreation and nature development go hand in hand.
