Das Befreiungsfeuer ist ein nationales niederländisches Symbol zur Erinnerung an das Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs am 5. Mai 1945.
Seit 1948 wird das Feuer jährlich am 5. Mai um 0.00 Uhr, am Befreiungstag, auf dem 5. Mai Platz in Wageningen entfacht. Laufgruppen zünden eine Fackel an diesem Feuer an, die dann in Staffel in die eigene Heimatgemeinde gebracht wird.
Bis 2011 wurde das Feuer auf dem 5. Mai Platz mit einer Fackel entzündet, die an einer kontinuierlich brennenden Flamme an der Gasstation von Vattenfall in der Droevendaalsesteeg in Wageningen entzündet wurde. Seit 2011 brennt das Befreiungsfeuer kontinuierlich im Befreiungsfeuerdenkmal nahe der Aula (Denkmal entworfen von Hans Roebers).
Seitdem fungiert die Flamme als Backup-Sicherheit (sagen wir einen Feuer-Notfallkasten).
