Im Jahr 1934 wurde die benachbarte Gemeinde Schoterland zugunsten der Gründung der Gemeinde Heerenveen aufgelöst. Die Dörfer im westlichen Teil von Schoterland wurden dann Haskerland angegliedert.
Die Gemeinde bestand bis zum 1. Januar 1984. An diesem Datum wurde die Gemeinde mit der Gemeinde Doniawerstal zusammengelegt, um die neue Gemeinde Scharsterland zu bilden, die am 1. Januar 1985 in Friesisch in Skarsterlân umbenannt wurde. Ein kleiner Teil des Südens der Gemeinde, der das Dorf Delfstrahuizen umfasst, wurde der Gemeinde Wymbritseradeel angegliedert.
