En 1934, la comuna vecina de Schoterland fue suprimida en beneficio de la creación de la comuna de Heerenveen. Los pueblos de la parte occidental de Schoterland fueron entonces anexados a Haskerland.
La comuna existió hasta el 1 de enero de 1984. En esa fecha, la comuna se agrupó con la comuna de Doniawerstal para formar la nueva comuna de Scharsterland, renombrada Skarsterlân en frisón desde el 1 de enero de 1985. Una pequeña parte del sur de la comuna, que incluye el pueblo de Delfstrahuizen, fue anexada a la comuna de Wymbritseradeel.
