In 1934, the neighboring municipality of Schoterland was dissolved to facilitate the creation of the municipality of Heerenveen. The villages in the western part of Schoterland were then attached to Haskerland.
The municipality existed until January 1, 1984. On that date, it was merged with the municipality of Doniawerstal to form the new municipality of Scharsterland, renamed Skarsterlân in Frisian on January 1, 1985. A small portion of the southern part of the municipality, including the village of Delfstrahuizen, was attached to the municipality of Wymbritseradeel.
