Die Prinses-Beatrix-Schleusen
Im Jahr 1931 wurde der Bau eines neuen Kanals von Amsterdam nach Tiel, dem Amsterdam-Rhein-Kanal, angeordnet. Auf Höhe von Jutphaas entstand ein Abzweig zur Lek östlich von Vreeswijk mit zwei nebeneinander liegenden Schleusen, die mit Hubtüren ausgestattet waren. Am 23. März 1938 wurde diese neue Schleuse offiziell eröffnet. Dies führte für Vreeswijk zu einem dramatischen Rückgang des Wohlstands. Die Schifffahrt umging fortan das Dorf. Einzelhändler und Gewerbetreibende verloren ihre Existenzgrundlage und verließen das Dorf. Alle Segel wurden gesetzt, um bei der neuen Schleuse ein neues 'Einkaufszentrum' zu gründen, dort wo in naher Zukunft das Industriegebiet Het Klooster entstehen sollte, aber der Plan scheiterte. Rijkswaterstaat lehnte alle Anträge auf Genehmigungen ab.
