Die Erfdijk ist ein sich durch die Landschaft schlängelnder Damm, der einst das Dorf Herpen vor dem Maaswasser aus dem Südosten schützen sollte. Die Erfdijk wurde um 1300 angelegt und ist damit einer der ersten Dämme im Maasland. Der Name hat mit der Verteilung von gemeinschaftlichem Boden unter den Herpenaren zu tun: Zu jedem Stück oder Erbe gehörte ein Stück Damm, das man unterhalten musste.
