The Erfdijk is a winding dyke through the landscape, which was once meant to protect the village of Herpen from the waters of the Maas River coming from the southeast. The Erfdijk was constructed around 1300, making it one of the first dykes in the Maasland. The name is related to the division of common land among the residents of Herpen: each piece of land or plot came with a section of dyke to maintain.
