Der östliche Teil von Zentrum Amsterdam ist der schönste Teil der Stadt. Es war sehr lange ein Hafenbereich, und deshalb gibt es viel industrielles Erbe zu bewundern. Dazwischen entstehen neue Viertel. Das Marine Etablissement war jahrhundertelang geschlossen, ist aber jetzt begehbar, und auf der Ostenburgereiland wird an einem spannenden Viertel gebaut, das einem das Gefühl gibt, im Meat Packers District in Manhattan zu sein.
