Der ursprüngliche Bunker stammt aus dem 16. Jahrhundert und wurde am Strand, etwa vor dem Torre de Sant Pau , aufgestellt.
Zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts wurden ihm die Wappen des Vereinigten Königreichs Portugal, Brasilien und der Algarve hinzugefügt. Am Ende des liberalen Kampfes wurde es gewaltsam abgerissen , aber unter dem Staat Novo wurde es unter Verwendung einiger identifizierter Fragmente des ursprünglichen Denkmals vor dem Rathaus wieder aufgebaut.
Picotas waren Steinmonolithen , in denen Kriminelle entlarvt und manchmal hingerichtet wurden.
