La picota original data del segle XVI i va ser erigida a la platja, aproximadament davant de la Torre de Sant Pau .
A principis del segle XIX se li van afegir les armes del Regne Unit de Portugal, Brasil i Algarve. Al final de la lluita liberal va ser demolit forçosament , però sota l' Estat Novo va ser reconstruït davant de l'Ajuntament utilitzant alguns fragments identificats del monument original.
Les picotes eren monòlits de pedra on es desemmascarava i de vegades executava els criminals.
